Preparing your home for a newborn or maternity photography session

Your home is more than just a place to live—it’s your sanctuary. It’s where you feel most comfortable, where your baby will be introduced to the world, and where your family’s story continues to unfold. As an in-home newborn photographer, I understand the significance of your home being the heart of your story. By choosing an in-home session, you’re not just capturing your baby’s first days—you’re celebrating the space where your family grows and thrives.

My role is to help you capture those beautiful, raw moments in the space where you feel most at ease. To make the most of your in-home session, here are my top tips for creating a calm and inviting atmosphere, ensuring your photos reflect the true essence of your home and family.

Showcase your home’s unique personality when preparing for a newborn photography session

Your home tells a story. It’s filled with treasures that reflect your family’s journey, from the cherished keepsakes on the shelves to the cosy blankets on the couch. When preparing for your newborn session, think about the personal touches that make your home uniquely yours. Whether it’s a handmade quilt, a favourite book, or the baby’s first stuffed animal, these meaningful items add warmth and depth to your images.

You don’t need to redecorate or make your home look picture-perfect—just let it be a reflection of who you are. I’ll work with the details you’ve carefully chosen, capturing the natural beauty of your surroundings and celebrating your family’s story as it unfolds within your own walls.

Let natural light work its magic

Light plays a crucial role in creating dreamy, natural photos. One of the benefits of in-home sessions is being able to work with the soft, natural light that fills your space. As we move through your home, I’ll find the best-lit areas—whether it’s the nursery bathed in morning light or the cozy corner of the living room with its warm afternoon glow.

Before the session, think about which rooms capture the most light. We’ll focus on these areas to create a soft, timeless feel in your images. And don’t worry—if you’re unsure, I’ll guide you to ensure we make the most of your home’s natural beauty.

Personal details make your session uniquely yours

One of the most special things about in-home newborn photography is how personal the experience can be. You’re inviting me into your space—where your baby will grow, take their first steps, and make countless memories. To make your photos even more meaningful, consider incorporating personal items into the session. Whether it’s a family heirloom or a sentimental object, these details help tell your story in a way that’s authentic and unique to your family.

We’ll include these meaningful touches, creating images that capture not only your newborn’s first days but also the essence of your family’s life at home.

Creating a calm, cosy environment: one of the most essential steps preparing your home for a newborn photography session

Your baby feels the energy of their surroundings, so it’s important to keep your home peaceful and comfortable during the session. Keeping the space warm and cozy will help your baby feel safe and settled. We can work in whichever part of the house feels most relaxed, and if you have other children or pets, having someone help look after them during the session can create a calm environment for everyone.

From your newborn’s gentle coos to their tiny fingers wrapped around yours, we’ll capture the sweetest moments when everyone feels at ease.

What to expect once I arrive at your home

When I arrive at your home, you can expect me to be on time and bring a calm, intentional energy to the session. I’m very mindful of the rhythm already taking place in your home, so if your baby is feeding, napping, or you’re simply enjoying a quiet moment, I will not interrupt. Instead, I’ll walk quietly around with you or your partner, assessing where the best natural light is coming through. Once we find that ideal spot, I’ll set up my bean bag using only the finest organic and luxury cottons, ensuring your baby’s comfort. At the same time, I’ll lay out my collection of newborn wardrobe options for you to choose from. I recommend up to three outfits for the session, and you’ll have time to select the pieces that feel perfect for your baby.

After that, either you or I will gently change the baby—it’s as much mum-led as it is baby-led in my sessions, so it’s entirely up to you. We won’t rush. I always make sure there’s plenty of time for you to get ready while I begin connecting with your little one. I’ll start with your baby on the bean bag, carefully testing the light and capturing their tiny, gentle movements. From there, we’ll ease into a variety of photos, some focused on your baby’s sweet, natural poses, while others will capture the candid moments of you and your partner together with your newborn.

The best part? You’ll feel completely relaxed knowing you’re at home, with all your comforts nearby, whether it’s an extra blanket, a snack, or simply the quiet joy of not needing to leave the house. Once we’ve wrapped up the session, I’ll send you a couple of sneak peeks from the back of my camera, so you can enjoy a glimpse of these priceless moments while you continue your day, knowing you’ve just done something truly special for your family.

Preparing your home for a newborn photography session doesn’t mean perfect—it means authentic

You don’t need to stress about having the ‘perfect’ home. Authenticity is what makes these sessions so powerful. I’m here to capture the beauty of your family in the space that you’ve created, just as it is. My job is to find the most flattering light, angles, and moments, so you can focus on what matters most—soaking in the joy of your newborn’s first days at home.
